Memorial Day

Image
Another fantastic week to be out in the elements. Slightly below average temperatures and no precip, until Sunday, when a small shower moved through (0.04") bringing warm and humid air along with it. Each day keeps getting more and more Summer-ish around here. However, with only 25% of average precipitation so far this May, things are starting to dry up (0.74" of 2.96"). April's reserve seems to be running out... ( OSNW3 Observations | May 19 - 26, 2008) Continuing the temperature comparison for this May and last May, we are averaging 4.3° below last May, with a more moderation of temps and less extreme swings. ---- Cloud Appreciation Our pal, Casey Kessenich, snapped this sunset in the Green Bay metro area this past week. (Ashwaubenon, WI Looking West - May 21, 2008)

A refreshing turn around spilled into the area as the third week of May chugged along. Temperatures surpassed daily averages and sunshine was abundant. A few systems did pass through, but only depositing minor amounts of precipitation. Rainfall is lacking this month. OSNW3 has recorded 0.70", only 23% of average through the first 18 days. ( OSNW3 Observations | May 12 - 18, 2008) In keeping the comparison of temperatures from this May to last May, this May is still 3.6°F on average, below last May. Although 4 of the past 5 days have been either at or above average, a system moved through on Saturday night and in it's wake brought cooler temperatures. Sunday's high temperature maxed out at 60.1°F. A 14.2°F drop from Saturday's high temperature. (Sunday's data is not indicated on the graph as it will be recorded on Monday the 19th. All data recorded at OSNW3 is of the previous 24 hours) ---- Cloud Appreciation On Saturday I took a quick jaunt to Lake Winnebag...

Chilly Beginning

Image
Now that May has been here for almost two weeks some folks are starting to complain about how "chilly" this Spring has been. Most are waiting patiently for that first, real, warm up. ( OSNW3 Observations | May 6 - 11, 2008) Due to the "chilly" start, I have compared last years start to May to this years start to May. We are averaging 5.6°F below last years average hi temp for the first 11 days. It doesn't seem like much, but looking at the graph below, the past four days have been considerably cooler then last years. I believe that is the warm up most people are expecting and craving. Unfortunately an extended warm up is not in our near future. ---- Lake Flies Have Hatched I took a bike ride out to Lake Winnebago on Sunday and as I got closer I could sense the lake flies had hatched. BAM! In my ears, eyes, nose, and mouth... gosh I hate those things. They're everywhere near the lakes edge right now. They do disappear a few blocks away from the la...

Cinco de Mayo

Image
Remember last week? I barely do, but as I was finally able to sit down and think back weatherwise, I remembered it snowed early last week! We received what would seemingly be our last flakes of the season as the snow wasn't able to accumulate here in Oshkosh. Snow in May? Stranger things have happened, and as this season has proven, do not count it out. As May moves in we've experienced light accumulations of rain and below average temperatures with today being the fairest of the past eight. No snow yet, thankfully! ( OSNW3 Observations | Apr 28 - May 5, 2008) (Neenah, WI - Apr 28, 2008) ---- The Spring Itch Classic Our golf tour has seen better weather. However, this past event wasn't the worst conditions we've ever played in. We've played in some sleet in the UP a while back. Unfortunately I have no photos to prove it, just memories. The course conditions this past Friday and Saturday were much better in Stevens Point at SentryWorld then in Nekoosa at L...

Water Logged! Part Deux

Image
This past week gave us six days in a row of beautiful temperatures along with a couple rounds of moderate rainfall and a thunderstorm. With only three days remaining in April we have observed 5.91" of precipitation here at OSNW3. I took a look around and was unable to find the record precipitation for April in Oshkosh, but I did find Green Bay's record and it stands at 5.69" back in 1888. I have a feeling we may be flirting with an all-time record! On a side note... we had a few snow flakes fall from the sky on Saturday, which after, I had to update the Winter History - Firsts & Lasts data sheet. ( OSNW3 Observations | Apr 21-27, 2008) ---- First Tornado Warning of 2008 It turned out to be an exciting evening on Friday. The possible severe weather outbreak that Weather Scout had been talking about all week came true. The storms built and moved rapidly northeast towards Oshkosh at 47mph (noted during storm by Northern Wisconsin Weather on his chat box). I was f...

The Color Green

Image
As another week of April winds down over here it is evident Spring is in full swing. The grass is green, the tulips, lilies, and hostas are popping, and my local track (golf course) is open! We had a short bout with rain this past week raising the OSNW3 monthly total to 4.38" of precipitation, which is 1.51" above the monthly average. The daytime max temp on Apr 16 topped out at 70.0F, something that went unfelt since Oct 21, 2007 when the max temp topped out at 70.9F. It felt fantastic even though it was very windy. ( OSNW3 Observations | Apr 14-20, 2008) ---- Additions to the Website My attempt at an OSNW3 extremes database and at tracking the amount of days we saw the Sun here at OSNW3, have begun. ( Monthly Extremes | Days with Sun ) I am merely an amateur at presenting this data and welcome all suggestions, ideas and comments. ---- Minneapolis, MN Our travels brought us to Minnesota this past weekend. The forecast, early in the week, called for sun with temps in...

Water Logged

Image
OSNW3 received quite a bit of rain lately. Enough to surpass the monthly average in seven days (Apr 7-13). April 2008 is blowing April 2007 "out of the water" so to speak. Total precipitation this month to date is 4.02" compared to 2.49" for the entire month in 2007. ( OSNW3 Observations | Apr 7-13, 2008) The standing water is receding slowly as dryer conditions move in. The photo below is, what I will call, the height of the deluge. Yesterday it was quite breezy and the video below represents that fairly well. The video takes place at the shore of Lake Winnebago on the property of, our pals, Jason and Courtney. (OSNW3 - Apr 11, 2008) (Lake Winnebago - Apr 12, 2008) ---- Northern MN & WI Snow The two snowstorms to our north this past week disrupted the lives of many folks in Minnesota and Wisconsin including, our pals, Eric and Annette who live in Grand Rapids, MN. Eric described huge snowflakes falling sideways and blizzard conditions. Shortly after th...
