Aeolian Processes

This past week temperatures again hovered below average for the most part and precipitation fell on 3 of 7 days. An almost carbon copy of last week regarding temps and precip with the only major difference being the wind. The rain is much needed as we are currently still in a slight drought situation.

High pressure brings east winds on Lake Michigan
A large high pressure dominated the area on Wednesday and Thursday of this past week, bringing with it some moderately strong east/southeast winds. I happened to be in Sheboygan, WI for work both days and was able to spend some time on the west shores of Lake Michigan. Thursday packed a better punch then Wednesday. If I remember correctly the sustained winds on Thursday were hov…

Back To Basics

Autumn is back. The warm spell of last weekend came and went. It is nice to get back on schedule. Temperatures hovered below average for the most part and precipitation fell on 4 of 7 days last week. Steam!
On Saturday morning when the sun finally penetrated through the fog and hit the rooftops directly a few plumes of steam gave way. I thought it was fun to watch, so I snapped a photo.

Indian Summer

Image
This past week was a nice one. Comfortable temperatures, sunshine, and even a day of rain. However, a large High pressure to our east is currently ushering in very warm air which is sending our daily max temps 10+ degrees above average. Feels like an Indian Summer. (OSNW3 October Observations)

Autumn!

Image
Finally! It's here. Shorter days, cooler temperatures, and best of all... weather. Autumness! We enjoyed the First frost of the season at OSNW3 this past Friday as the low temp dipped to 35.6. Another frost occurred the following day as it bottomed out at 35.6 for the second day in a row. Even with the cool and refreshing air of last week it's almost certain we'll see a couple more mild days topping out above 70 this month. However we can't totally rule out snow, either. October has averaged 0.1" since 1971 here in Oshkosh. The climate data concludes that most of any snow that fell in October over the years has fallen near the end if not the last day of the month. A snowy Halloween 2008 would be a treat!
