Goodbye May, Hello June!

Image
After the above average temperatures and dry conditions of two weeks ago, this past week was just the opposite. Temperatures dropped below average and the rains came. The maximum temperature for the 24 hour period ending on May 28 never broke the 60° mark, topping out at 53.4°. There were four days in a row where we measured accumulating precipitation here at OSNW3. Two of those days were at or above three tenths of an inch. A thunderstorm rumbled through as well on May 30 during the late morning hours creating a 15 minute rain delay as we made the turn at Lakeshore . Overall May of 2009 was below average... in temperature (2nd straight year) and precipitation (3rd straight year). Also, May of 2009 was cloudier than the previous two. Memorial Day 2009

Just a tenth of an inch of precipitation fell this past week. Things do not seem dry currently, but if we fail to reach our average monthly precipitation mark with the remaining days I am sure the lack of precipitation will start to show. If that scenario transpires it will be the third straight May that has failed. Click here for the State Drought Monitor. Temperatures soared this past week as well. We recorded three consecutive days of 75° or above with one of those days breaking 80° here at OSNW3. We had a few boisterous thunderstorms roll through mid-week, but for the most part, last week was quite. Late in the week a cold front dropped day time highs 10+ degrees and ushered in strong winds that made it feel considerably cooler than the day before. As far as the green-up is considered, we're nearing 100%. We started out in Iron Mountain, then headed to Marquette, and finished in Harris. Weather was perfect for this time of year. 60's and sunny both Thursday & Friday (May 14-15), but then on Saturday things took a huge turn for the worse. Northwest wi

May Hatchings

This past week was absolutely perfect. Temperatures kept on climbing and topped out above 70 four days in a row. The rains came late in the week and with it some cooler air. Nothing to extreme, but it was a friendly reminder that it is only the first half of May. Trees around the area are leafed out, flower beds are in bloom, and I've mowed the lawn. Spring is in full effect. I was in Minneapolis for the week so my wife held down the obs in my absence. She provided great assistance with flawless technique. What I conclude from the observation data and the daily OSNW3 webcam movie is, it was much drier and sunnier than the previous week. While out in MPLS I noticed most, if not all, of the trees had leafed out already. It was a surprise to me, for when I left Oshkosh, less then 50% of the trees were even budding. As this weekend comes to a close here in Oshkosh most, if not all, the trees are budding with a handful of them leafed out. Allergy season is underway!
