Met Winter (DJF) Stats

Oshkosh residents have endured a fair share of snow this winter. Nearly doubling the long term average snowfall for meteorological winter (Dec, Jan, Feb). Officially, the Waste Water Treatment Plant has recorded 48.7 inches of snow. Stations on the north and south sides of the city have recorded 39.3 and 61.0 inches respectively. At OSNW3, a mile east of the WWTP, we recorded 57.1 inches. These are very respectable amounts. Any amount over 48 inches is in the Oshkosh top ten of all-time for a meteorological winter season. While February was below average (summary below), both daily maximum and minimum temperatures were above average for the winter. Oshkosh, WI - Winter Forecast 2012-13

The winter of 2012-13 begins my third year following the Earth's cycling weather patterns. One way to remain locked into them is utilizing Lezak's Recurring Cycle theory. I first learned about the LRC theory in October of 2010. An eagerness to learn the theory has grown into a passion. From a once inconceivable backyard snowfall forecast in 2010, to a complete seasonal outlook for Oshkosh in 2011, to a website dedicating my attempts at providing accurate forecast numbers for the entire Midwest in 2012-13. Early March Ice Shoves & An Oshkosh Then and Now Photo

The first winter storm warning of the season was issued on Mar 2.  The storm was worthy of the warning and it reminded me how much I enjoy a snowstorm.  It is something that has been severely lacking in 2011-12 winter season. More on the storm can be found here . A little over two weeks ago I posted preliminary meteorological winter statistics.  I have now updated the numbers and they can be found here . Overall the numbers kept moving in the direction they were headed. Winter was abnormally warm and lacking in snowfall. Spring weather is just around the corner. Following the LRC and the trend it provides for temperature and precipitation, Oshkosh should be fully entrenched in spring by the end of March.  For a look at the trends please click here . 2011-12 Meteorological Winter Statistics

This is certainly the fun part that comes along with having the archived historical daily weather data for Oshkosh! The data archive goes back to 1894. This winter has claimed a spot the history books! Recognizing the significance of this winters behaviors in categories of mean temperature and the amount of days with maximum temperatures above freezing is crucial. Adding snowfall total and days with measurable snowfall to the comparison the 2011-12 winter becomes one for the ages. Meteorological Spring Has Arrived!

Meteorological winter has come to an end. It has been a season of extraordinary learning accompanied by many, many snow measurements. Since the last blog entry it has snowed seven times and I've taken at least twice as many measurements. Twenty-one inches of snow fell this February at OSNW3 which is more than double the average snowfall for Oshkosh. We maintained almost a ten inch snow depth for the month but not with out a complete melt down over a seven day stretch with temperatures topping the freezing mark to start the second half. The final week knocked the spring fever out of the air reminding all of us winter really wasn't over. March looks to be an active month trending toward the wintry side peaking near the end of the month with the fourth iteration of the Great Lakes Cyclone . Meteorological Winter is Complete

When the Western Great Lakes region thinks about an El Nino winter, we think warm and dry conditions. Since the beginning of the meteorological winter season that isn't exactly how it's been. February of 2010 felt like it was being affected by El Nino. Temperatures hovered above average (+2.4°F) without any major swings up or down, but in the end, it was above average in precipitation (+0.04") and snowfall (+5.1"), which are not typical characteristics. Sticking with that trend is the meteorological winter of 2009-2010 as it has proven that what is known and predicted of El Nino does not always come to fruition.
