How Was Your Summer?

Image
OSNW3 Meteorological Summer Statistics Precipitation In 2010 OSNW3 ranked second all-time for the wettest meteorological summer in Oshkosh history with 20.41 inches falling during the months of June, July, and August. In 2011 OSNW3 measured 10.36 inches coming in 44th all-time. 0.23 inches below the all-time average of 10.59 inches for the 103 years of data without a missing precipitation observation during the meteorological summer months. This particular data may come across like we had a 'dry' summer, but on 36 days we here at OSNW3 recorded measurable precipitation. Just short of the top ten, coming in at 11th for the most days with measurable precipitation all-time. Providing a some what active three months. More meteorological summer precipitation numbers can be found by clicking the image below. Annual precipitation numbers can be found here . (Oshkosh Meteorological Summer - Precipitation) Temperature Here at OSNW3, 2011 finished 0.9 degrees cooler than 2010,...

A Wet First Half Of Summer

Image
Since Jul 5, OSNW3 has recorded 6.72" of new rainfall. Back to back six inch months have left the property very soggy with a most pungent smell of rotten in some areas. Most days have been hot and humid with abundant sunshine making all shaded spots very popular. This evening, Jul 18, was the most bearable of the past fourteen I can recall with a mostly cloudy sky. It was still humid, but the sun wasn't beating down. Long range forecasts call for more of the same but with a little less precipitation. The WxBrief now includes links for EAA aviation weather information. Putting things in perspective, as of Jul 18, OSNW3's Summer (Jun,Jul,Aug) is currently ranked 16th for the all-time wettest in Oshkosh's...

A Summer-like Late May

Image
Hot and steamy were the operative words across most of the region the early part of this week. In my opinion, the temps and dew points between May 23 and May 26 proved to be just what the doctor ordered. The heat and humidity does wonders for my skin, my short game, and my thirst for quality brews. Keep it coming, please. However, thanks to a cold front that dropped through the Great Lakes, the month will end on a more comfortable note and we will again be able to open the windows and enjoy the outside air, inside. Looking forward, the first part of June is forecast to be seasonal. ( OSNW3 Weather Brief ) ( OSNW3 May Observations ) (OSNW3 May 2010 Summary) (click on graph for the month summary data - it will open a new tab/window) ---- Dog Days of May? The recent heat wave provided a few days that I like to define as "dog days". Somewhat similar to the "Winter Duration" formula I compare "Summer" (May-Sep) min and max temperatures. It is reasonable to c...

Here Comes The Heat

It was only a matter of time until the pattern changed and the heat would arrive. It's Summer after all, it will get hot. The highly talked about coolness of July is a thing of the past. The upcoming weekend sees forecast temps in the upper 80's, with a possibility of topping 90. The dew point will be up and it will feel sultry. Dog days of Summer will soon be here... but for how long? No matter! Bring it! May Hatchings

Image
This past week was absolutely perfect. Temperatures kept on climbing and topped out above 70 four days in a row. The rains came late in the week and with it some cooler air. Nothing to extreme, but it was a friendly reminder that it is only the first half of May. Trees around the area are leafed out, flower beds are in bloom, and I've mowed the lawn. Spring is in full effect.
