Still Lacking True Winter Conditions

In the last blog entry I discussed the fact that winter may finally be making an appearance in 2011-12. All we needed was one more day of 'winter season duration' criteria to have fully transitioned, but alas that did not happen. The maximum temperature recorded on Jan-23 for the previous 24 hours was above freezing and in a 'non winter fashion' precipitation fell in the form of liquid. The good news is we should expect two notable storm systems to make their way towards the region during the first half of February. The question is, will the precipitation make into WI and will it be rain or snow? For more information on the storm systems please see the OSNW3|LRC blog entry "Weather Event Forecasting - First Half Of February".

It's pretty interesting how this witner is shaping up. Not surprising we are currently very near the bottom of the all-time snowfall list. See the all-time Oshkosh monthly snowfall list through 2005-06 here and the OSNW3 monthly snowfall list from 2006-07 until now here.

  1. You're still lacking your offical "winter" condtions, That must be getting close to the latest isn't it? To your west over here, we definitly had your offical "winter " condtions, but we continue to have a very quiet snow season, and the weather the next couple of days will be sunny and 40 to 45.F. Which sounds more like Mid March.

  2. Hey D! Since I've been observing a 'winter season duration' yes it is the latest. Also, with my knowledge of the LRC and the way this season is playing out I do not think we'll see the consistent conditions to fully transition into 'winter'. Pretty awesome stuff!

  3. Wow what a big change in compared to last year! We have nice weather back here in the 40s to 50s, we almost completely lost our snowpack from the 1-2 weeks of Winter we did have! I feel the snow will be gone by the end of the weekend.

  4. We had a couple of weeks of winter, I guess.
I am just glad all this rain we have had did not come as snow...we would rank up with you guys in the snow depth. Temps as warm as they are will probably be an early blossoming for our peach and nectarine trees. My daffodils will be in full bloom in a day or two.
Just hope summer is not equally warm...at least for us.

  5. S, had some great reminders of winter the other day as I was flying home through Detroit. Delays, delays, delays. It will be interesting to watch spring/summer unfold! Could get pretty steamy...

  6. One day we wear insulated pants the next we wear shorts...crazy
It makes staying healthy at bit of a challenge.
I am hoping for a spring that is not so rough like last spring.

  7. S, I often wear the long johns, but this year it has been a rarity. Yes, we have snow, but not for too long. The last week of Feb could prove to be a killer of all winter thoughts.
