Great work, NWS GRB, the countless hours of computer model interpreting did a wonderful job predicting snow totals in Oshkosh. The Oshkosh average date for the first one inch snowfall is Dec 2. This year it occurred on Dec 9. We've been observing precipitation at OSNW3 since Nov 2006 and we've recorded a first one inch snowfall on Dec 9 twice, first time back in 2010. It is the latest date we've recorded in our six winters. The first ten days of November in Oshkosh were relatively chilly but offered plenty of sunshine. Daytime highs hovered near 40 degrees while overnight lows remained at or just below the freezing mark. In my mind, almost perfect weather to begin the last month of autumn. The early month chill quickly became a thing of the past when a strong warm front pushed 60 degree temperatures back into the region. But as often as it happens in November, a strong cold front slid in behind the warm front. A 30 degree drop in temperature occurred the night of November 12th. Strong northwest winds sustained themselves for over two days which helped manifest the first snowflakes of the season. Temperatures rebounded quite nicely after the plunge providing the area with a near record breaking warm Thanksgiving. The winter of 2012-13 begins my third year following the Earth's cycling weather patterns. One way to remain locked into them is utilizing Lezak's Recurring Cycle theory. I first learned about the LRC theory in October of 2010. An eagerness to learn the theory has grown into a passion. From a once inconceivable backyard snowfall forecast in 2010, to a complete seasonal outlook for Oshkosh in 2011, to a website dedicating my attempts at providing accurate forecast numbers for the entire Midwest in 2012-13. OSNW3 recorded 5.74 inches of precipitation this October which solidifies the third all-time greatest amount recorded in Oshkosh history for the month of October. Number two is 5.79 inches in 1995. The top spot belongs to 1967 when 6.82 inches fell. (click on image for entire data set - it will open a new tab/window) Oshkosh First 1" Snowfalls Since 1980, one may be hard pressed to remember when snow accumulated in Oshkosh more than an inch during late October into November. Off the top of my head, I could not remember what had happened in my own backyard. So I dug into it. Since 1980 the snow that fell at OSNW3 the days of Nov 9-10, 2011 is tied for the 4th earliest of all-time. Autumn, my favorite season, accentuates Wisconsin's four season climate. Summer heat is pushed back down south. Days become shorter. A sense of calm sets in as a steady transition of soothing orange, red and yellows appear on the trees. The cool air outside currently cannot let us forget about the dozen beautiful days that preceded our first real taste of cold air this season. The warm, sunny days and cool, clear nights helped create the exceptional fall foliage we see this autumn. They are truly the best weather conditions for great colors. (Oct-4, 2012) September was an over achieving month. It recorded below average precipitation staking claim as a top 25 driest of all time. All of Winnebago County is currently in a Moderate Drought condition. September also recorded below average temperatures becoming the first month since September of 2011 to do so.
