Snowstorm - Dec 8-9, 2009

Here comes Winter. The coldest air of the season is about to ride in on the heels of a top 5 snowstorm for many around the region. The storm proved to be what it was hyped up to be. The Wovel got a solid work out removing the almost 10" of fresh snow. It was heavy in most places and without fluff. I measured six times throughout the storm totaling 9.8". Each of the observations are listed below. For more on the storm from the NWS Green Bay and the NWS Milwaukee/Sullivan please click the links.

Two photos of the aftermath along with the storms duration webcam video (4MB). Radar loops of each day can be found here by clicking on the linked "Daily Weather Description". Pretty fun stuff.

Light snow, breezy with occasional blowing snow. (Measurements with this storm may prove to be difficult with the blowing snow conditions. I've set up another snow board in a different area of the yard to get as many measurements as possible.)

0.9" - Total Storm Snow
Current Snow Depth - 2"

  1. Nice report, still waiting for the snow up here in Duluth, I'm starting to have some doubts will see much more than 3" this far north, but will see. This storm is covering such a large portion of the Midwest/Great Lakes...Pretty amazing!

  2. 8-14"! Woohoo! I'm excited to see what your back yard looks like tomorrow morning. If you're anything like me, you won't be getting much sleep tonight.

Amazing indeed, Timothy. This is a huge storm!

    Keep the updates coming!

  3. Tim, WxWatcher. The US radar loop will be a fun one once it's all said and done!

  4. It appears you need some trees or shrubbery in your back / side yard.

  5. 9" and counting. Some great photos! This snow looks very wet, it's cool to see it accumulating in the middle of the fence.

Are you expecting high winds as the storm passes? We reached 31.1 mph early this morning here, and 44 just west of us. With all that snow sticking to the branches, you may be looking at power outages with that kind of wind.

  6. WxWatcher, any snow sticking to power lines is now gone. It's getting colder and I am about to get out there to remove the snow from the driveway/sidewalk. We are expecting high winds as the storm pulls out. Temps will be plummeting throughout the day. Single digits forecast overnight.

I might venture north to my office in Neenah later this afternoon. Maybe I'll get some photos of what went down up there.

  7. Looks like it smacked you too! We received at least 8.5" inches of snow as it is still falling.

Our snow here was very wet. If I was to do a juvenile thing such as throwing snowballs, I would be able to do it.

Ha, that reminds me of those old Calvin and Hobbes snow comics. :)

  8. What an amazing contrast here in Duluth to down there. The temperature during the majority of the storm was right around 10 degrees above zero at my location, the snowflakes up here in Duluth were quite small thru most of the event which led to a slow accumulation process since I was too far away from the surface low and more entrenched in the arctic air, only had 3" here in Duluth, but the winds were crazy late last night and This Morning...Gusting close to 35-40 mph at times! What a storm!

  9. Chris, I love throwing snowballs.

Tim, that is quite the contrast. To get even closer to your home, Nathan in Bayfield county measured 12.7". Although, he may have been in some Lake Effect bands. It's getting cold now and the snow is blowing across the roads. My drive to/from work today was slow going... even on the back roads. What a storm, I agree.

  10. Nice reports O, The storm was powerful here in Northwest Wisconsin as well, I pick up 8.50 inches with drifts a foot and a half deep! winds were 30MPH, We got tons of drifting. Here the snow wasn't as wet it didn't seem like Temps were in the upper teens during most of the snow.

  11. Another detailed, comprehensive review of a powerful storm. Thank you!

You made the 7th grade classes here at Auxvasse jealous yesterday. We are in the first stages of our weather unit, which is perfect this time of year. There is so much weather to be studied! I showed them some of the blogs that I look at, yours included. The kids really enjoyed your pictures, and we had a great discussion about the nature and effects of snowstorms.

(they got a kick out of your wovel, too)

  12. D, during the snowfall temps hovered around 30 here. I read your snowstorm report and indeed it was a doozy. Driving to Plymouth and back today I witnessed a lot of blowing snow and fields of drifts. Travel was a slow go.

WxWatcher, well heck, you showing your students this stuff makes the past two years of blogging all worth it! My arms and shoulders are super sore today... but, better than my back hurting! What's next? When will your students get their first big snow?

  13. So, what gives? You get all the snow and all we get are super chilled temperatures out this way!

My new Wovel is in the garage waiting...

  14. Believe me, the kids are chompin at the bit for a good snow storm! (so is their teacher)

  15. Bob, well... maybe it's because we had such a warm November and Mother Nature is lashing out at us. We've got your chilly readings now, but things are about to warm up. I hate hearing about Wovels collecting dust and cobwebs, which yours might be doing if you don't get some snow!

    WxWatcher, I'd like another please.

  16. How do you compare the wovel to a regular snow shovel? I'm thinking of getting one.

    Chris
