April Growth

The warmth finally broke. Temperatures soared into the 70s late this past week and... overnight, Apr 18-19, some liquid actually fell from the sky. It's been dry around here lately so it was nice to see the ground moist again. (OSNW3 April Observations)

Days Above 60°
As the season changes in and out of Winter here in WI, days with temperatures above 60° are few and far between. Through Apr 19, 2009 we here at OSNW3 have recorded 19 days since Oct 1, 2008. Each Spring when we experience consecutive days above 60 most everyone becomes active and gets into "summer" mode. The sounds of tillers, chain saws, and rakes can be heard all through out this block of Congress Ave.

The Fox River
Consecutive days with fantastic weather gets the fisherman out on the river. I enjoy seeing the "life" of Oshkosh come out in full force this time of year.

Signs of Spring
This is for Derek, NW Wisconsin Weather, as I know he may appreciate the growth around OSNW3. Finally some signs, D! Day Lillys, Tulips, and the Pussywillow Tree.

Remaining Ice Shoves
Impressive boulder movement due to the ice shoving onto shore comes into focus as the ice slowly melts from the recent warm temperatures.

  1. What a great posting - you've captured spring with your stats and photos. We noticed yesterday on our drive into Spokane, WA, that spring is here. The snow plows have been replaced by the heavy tractors as the farmers prepare the fields for Spring Wheat next to the greening fields with Winter Wheat.

  2. I appreciate your feedback, Bob! Thanks for reading. Spring Wheat vs Winter Wheat... what are the differences?

  3. I agree with Bob - you do a fabulous job of capturing YOUR spring in pictures. It's cool to see the difference between your spring and ours here in the Ozarks.

Once I get my internet back up and running (which means, once I get the money for it! LOL), I will have to start my own blog to go along with yours and my little brother's.

    Have a great Monday!

  4. Ami, Thanks for reading, it makes me feel nice. I am certain our Springs differ dramatically. What's the first difference you noticed?

Internet should be free, and you should totally blog it up!

  5. Ami, you should definitely get a blog going of your own. You all get some pretty good weather down there (and floods), it'd be nice to see pictures when it happens.

Spring has sprung in Wisconsin, eh? Nice post! I wish I could remember exactly, but I think our ground looked like that in mid-March/early April. I have a question...is the top ice shove pic the same location as in one of your previous posts (the one with you standing next to the tree)? If it is, that's a cool contrast, it really shows the warmth you've had lately.

Looks like you've got chances for snow today. This system just won't quit! It's pulling in some cool air from Canada, bringing us partly cloudy skies and temps in the low 60s. A primer to our 80° temps in store by the end of the week.

Still digging for that storm data! My initial inquiry has led me to more questions...so now I'm looking at all severe events in April for the state of MO. The NWS really does a fine job of archiving this stuff.

  6. WxWatcher, yah you betcha, hey! Thanks.

When I was in STL in early March I recall things looking like they do up here now. Great observation on the ice shove photo! That is the same spot that I was standing in. What struck me the most was how I didn't notice the boulder when the ice shoves where there and then seeing how far the ice shoves moved the boulder on shore. Amazing.

It's no longer a chance... it's snowing. Has been for a while, but it's not accumulating in my backyard today. On my drive to Neenah this morning I saw some vehicles with a good coating of snow on them. They most likely traveled from the North.

Like I said before, WxWatcher, if you want any radar loops just let me know! I'd love to assist you in any way possible.

  7. The radar loops of this storm can be found on this page of the OSNW3 website. Just click on the linked descriptions.

  9. OSN, Cool post about Spring! the ice in the photos is amazing, that there still is ice I mean, I am noticing it get green quick. I just wanted to say, I noticed your Tulips look small and I only see one leaf, You might have to replace thoughs this upcoming fall. One leaf normally means the bulbs are spent, I know this becuase I have some one-leafers in my gardens. If you still want some Tulips this spring, I would greatly recommend you go to Menards! and keep looking they always have some for sale in spring for a good price!

  10. I just thought I would help you out with that Since I have had the Experince with this! if you would like anymore help, if you need more help or recomendations just ask! I will be glad to help.

  11. Thanks for the tip D!

My thumb isn't all that green. I was surprised to even see the Tulips... as I thought the squirrels ate all the bulbs. :)

The bulbs that are producing this year have been in the ground for at least 2 years. Is that bad?

My wife does the majority of the gardening and last year she was preggo so... last year was shrugged off so to speak.

  12. Oh, they have been in the ground for 2 years, Then it is liking they have bloomed out, especially if there a "fancy" variety, The Tulips will grow, but they probably wont bloom again, That's the downside of Tulips, I have seen some of the more older Plain colored tulips do bloom for many years. My tip to you is Try to dig into some Daffodils next Fall, But watch out what you buy, some say there hardy for this area but they are actually not, the common all yellow colored daffodil is hardy to our areas. They sell both Tulips and Daffodils at Menards in spring in pots, if you are interested in seen some in your garden this spring. Again I highly recomend you look at Menards soon, they should be out soon, if not right now.

  13. I'm so blind I did not even noticed you took the photos just for me! LOL Yes I do love to see the progress in your area! please continue to update for me!

  14. The ice shove pic is even more dramatic when you compare it with the one you just posted. I've got to see those sometime.

  15. Hi OSNW3! I just wanted to let you know that I am one step closer to getting my rain gauge up and running. I let them know about my new location, and I have a new station number... it is MO-CF-5. I'll try to get my gauge up this weekend.

Have a great day! I hope your weather is as beautiful as ours! We have high in the 80's for the next few days, with a chance of scattered storms. Spring has most definitely sprung!!

  16. D, I will have some questions in a couple weeks prior to our shopping spree! Again, thanks for the tips!

WxWatcher, I wish I would've noticed it right away, I could have taken better before/after shots! UGH. :)

Ami, that's AWESOME! Was it a painless process to get your station changed? It's beautiful up here! Your warmth is traveling on some southwest winds and will be here on Friday! whOOp!

  17. Very painless! I just gave them my new address, and that was it! :) They are wonderful there.

I'm glad to be sharing our warmth with you! It is lovely for sure!!
