Cool Down Right On Schedule

Image
It's been a hot and dry July around the region as we all know. Back in late June when I was writing my monthly weather column for the Oshkosh Northwestern I was able to note a projection of relief from the heat and better chances for precipitation around the middle of the month using Lezak's Recurring Cycle theory. Granted the cool down came 24-48 hours past the initial time frame the LRC based Oshkosh trend had projected, but never the less, it came and it is here. One of the many beauty's of the LRC is that it breathes. Keeps us on our toes, so to speak. "I like to use the LRC (Lezak’s Recurring Cycle) to put details onto the CPC month long forecast. If the jet dips and dives as it has since October during this part of the cycle, July could eventually harbor a more seasonal feel with extra chances at meaningful precipitation. I am personally looking forward to the middle part of the month when daytime highs in the 70s could be possible providing a needed break f...

Oshkosh's Warmest March Ever & What To Expect Going Into Summer

Image
Best March ever?! The month started out a snow lovers dream. A fresh 6+ inches of the white stuff on Mar 2-3. Finally some snow to play in! We did all we could to maximize the potential . However, as the cycling weather patterns would prove, the winter like conditions were short lived and the long term trend morphed into the expected spring like pattern. With a flip of a switch spring had sprung. The defining moment of the atypical March was when the overnight lows remained above fifty degrees for five consecutive nights, Mar 18-22. Overnight lows rarely drop below fifty degrees in the month of July. Absolutely amazing! Needless to say almost everything is in bloom and the grass seed I planted two weeks ago is nearly two inches in height. (Oshkosh's Warmest March Ever - 2012) (click image for entire data set) I finally got that off my chest. I felt a delayed reaction would be best suited. The media was a bit over the top at times. Realistically the weather was magical and I c...

Snowiest Stretch Of The Winter. Wait, Is It Winter Yet?

Image
Winter is showing signs of actually presenting itself in 2011-2012. According to the OSNW3 Winter Season Duration formula, if the maximum temperature for Jan-22 stays below 32 degrees OSNW3 will have finally made the transition into winter. Regardless of the outcome this is the latest beginning to winter since the 2006-07 season . A short lived Arctic air outbreak occurred Jan 19-21 giving the region a taste of winter. Here at OSNW3 our lowest recorded temperature for the three day span, -5.6 degrees, took place during the early morning hours of Jan-20. Looking ahead, using the OSNW3 forecast temperature trend based on the Lezak's Recurring Cycle theory , days will become seasonal with a good amount of them reaching the freezing mark or greater through the first half of February. The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) agrees as well for the next 14 days. I added snowfall forecast maps to the OSNW3 Weather Brief . Check them out. ( OSNW3 Weather Brief ) ( OSNW3 January Obse...
