April 2013 finished with a mean temperature of 40.6 degrees officially, the 13th coldest in Oshkosh history. OSNW3 finished the month at 39.7 degrees which places within the top 10. The coldest April in Oshkosh history occurred in 1907 when the mean temperature was 37.1 degrees. Precipitation was abundant. 4.20 inches fell at the Waste Water Treatment plant putting the official total in the top 20 all-time. OSNW3 recorded 15 days with precipitation; 1 of those days totaled 2.11 inches while the remaining 14 totaled 2.08 inches. Since 2007 OSNW3 has averaged 4.24 inches of precipitation in the month of April, 147% of the Oshkosh 30 year average. These extraordinary feats cannot go into the history books without a mention of snowfall. While the amount measured at OSNW3 is outside the top 20 (tied for 25th) the amount of days with measurable snowfall tops the list. After a bruising warm March, the warmest March in Oshkosh history, April began with a relative chill to the air. Daytime highs in the 40s and 50s were a far cry from the 70s just a few weeks prior. The chill stayed with us the entire month. Throughout the 30 days of April only 7 of them recorded a high temperature above 60 degrees. Accompanied with the cool daytime highs were cold nights that heightened concern for area crop damage. Few vineyards and orchards are suited to stave off sub freezing temperatures after an early start to the growing season like we had in March. As Wisconsinites we know April low temperatures can regularly dip below the freezing mark. Fortunately our area didn't have to endure a hard freeze as our lowest temperature recorded in April was 30 degrees. Temperatures dipped below the freezing mark 6 times with the most extreme stretch occurring between April 10 and April 13 when each night fell below freezing. Total confusion of the senses for my wife and I last week. Shortly after the snowstorm we were jet setting to Jamaica to watch friends of ours tie the knot. My white skin did not fair well against the intense sunshine of the Caribbean. I learned that multiple reapplications of UV defense is necessary. Enough about my ineptitude of skin care. April at OSNW3 was a deluge of historical proportions. As Tony stated in the comments of the last entry, "you might want to consider putting in a rice paddy this year". The entire time we were away standing water was present on the webcam image. It has since receded and just recently started to actually dry out. The drying out trend will attempt to sustain itself until the 'signature' storm of this years LRC returns sometime around May 12. After the storm our cool and soaked spring will continue to roll on. Just as April finished, May begins with warmer than average temperatures here at OSNW3. All things must come to an end however, and our above average temperatures will do just that in the coming days. I know it'll be a rude awakening for myself as the golf course has been a very tolerable place as of late. Usually it's not so in late April, early May. The 14 day temperature outlook has the Great Lakes region in the below average category which may dampen the early Spring spirit. Addendum - May 5, from the NWS GRB , Tornadoes in Winnebago County . I was in Minneapolis for the week so my wife held down the obs in my absence. She provided great assistance with flawless technique. What I conclude from the observation data and the daily OSNW3 webcam movie is, it was much drier and sunnier than the previous week. While out in MPLS I noticed most, if not all, of the trees had leafed out already. It was a surprise to me, for when I left Oshkosh, less then 50% of the trees were even budding. As this weekend comes to a close here in Oshkosh most, if not all, the trees are budding with a handful of them leafed out. Allergy season is underway!
