I was gifted a book this Christmas. White Hurricane: A Great Lakes November Gale and America's Deadliest Maritime Disaster by David G. Brown. Until this book was in my possession I had not known about this storm. After reading the first couple pages I decided to do a bit of research on my own before reading more. I grabbed the Oshkosh data for this time period, the Archived Daily Weather Maps and a handful of links with published material on the storm. I am anticipating this book being a great read. The winter of 2014-15 has begun. Winter is officially here, in my backyard. Let me review the the conditions that constitute a winter season. The definition of a Winter Season Duration (WSD) is as follows, and in the case of OSNW3, six(6), is used for "several" consecutive days. First Day of Winter represents a daily max temp equal or below 32°F and a snow depth of 1" or greater for several consecutive days. Last Day of Winter represents a daily max temp equal or above 32°F and a snow depth less than 1" for several consecutive days. ---- The winter of 2014-15 began on Nov 21, 2014. I've been traveling to a customer site in Sheboygan, WI for over a decade. The route I choose to take most often is the road less traveled. I like to go slow and look at the scenery. My favorite portion of the route (the bulls-eye on the map above) is traversing Wisconsin's southern portion of the Niagara Escarpment . During the winter months I often observe a large chunk of ice slowly snaking it's way down the escarpment towards the road. (the bulls-eye on the map below is where the chunk of ice exists) I think of the chunk of ice as a mini glacier. Each time I pass it I notice how it grows, deforms and flows through time. This year is it abnormally large. Compelled by it, I stopped and took a couple photos today. The National Weather Service in Green Bay has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the area. It's the first of the season. We will be watching it's progress through our backyard with due diligence (an act with a certain standard of care). We recorded our first measurable snow the morning of Nov 22nd. Based on NWS GreenBay NOWData (81-10), Oshkosh's first measurable snow occurs on Nov 26th. Based on OSNW3 data since 2006 , it occurs on the 324th day of the year, which is Nov 19-20th.

The 2013-14 winter forecast for Oshkosh is based on organic forecasting techniques. More details on the techniques are located in another  blog entry  (click the link to read more). I am going to make this forecast short and sweet and let the data do most of the talking. There are a few items that are new to my model this year and more info on them can be found in this blog entry  (click the link to read more). Temperatures will likely end near average, but I need to mention this average is misleading. There will be many ups and downs along the way, shots of seasonal warm and cool air, just like most winters in WI. Snowfall will likely be above average. On Saturday October 26th my daughter and I ventured to Calumet County Park . County Park is located almost directly across Lake Winnebago from Oshkosh. About 12 miles as the crow flies and 35 miles by northern road access. Upon arrival, traveling down the Niagara Escarpment , we were witness to an excited Lake Winnebago. Forecast from the NWS Green Bay foretold winds of 15-20 knots and waves of 3-4 feet. This forecast would verify. The sights and sounds were just what we were looking for. Colorful trees whipping wildly with the constant roar of the wind and crashing waves. And of course the playground set. We also witnessed a smoke plume off in the distance towards the northwest depicted in the map above by an approximate red triangle and in the image below by a red circle.
